In New Zealand, the Adult Numeracy Initiative grew out of the Numeracy Project in schools. Indeed, some of the same people were involved in both. A similar situation exists in England.

This is a key issue and ties into one that pervades the whole adult numeracy "debate" - how does the numeracy done in academic settings compare with that in everyday of work setting? Can one assess in one setting and make judgments about performance in another setting?
